What happened to stochastic hydrology? A review

Motivation

In the 80s-90s stochastic hydrology experienced a b large boom, in particular when simulating groundwater flow and transport. Nowadays these methods are seldmoly used even though hydrologists and hydrologeologists realise that subsurface heterogeneities cannot be accounted for only by increasing their simulation models' resolution.

Aims of the thesis

The aim of this thesis has a historic and a scientific side: (1) the student will peform a detailed literature review about the stochastic hydrology approaches from the 80s-90s. (2) the student will review the present challenges that hydrology is facing today and compare them to the possibilities provided by stochastic hydrology.

Methods

Systematik literature review. Use of literature data bases. Summarizing and recombiniation of collected knowledge.
